Cosmic Drift begins with the observation of snow as an ordinary material, yet it does not attempt to present snow in its recognizable form. Photography here functions merely as a mechanism through which appearance is transformed. By compressing information about scale, distance, and space, familiar fragments of nature are detached from established cognitive experience and begin to assume the visual structure of a cosmic landscape. As cues of scale are removed, perception enters a state of uncertainty. The boundaries between snow and stars, the microscopic and the macroscopic, the near and the distant begin to blur. What the image produces is not an optical illusion, but a displacement of scale, through which the viewer undergoes a process of cognitive drift between recognition and revision. Time is only one of the conditions through which Cosmic Drift comes into appearance. By extending the act of looking and delaying the formation of meaning, the work allows the viewer to perceive the process through which cognition constructs the world. Time is not the subject here, but the dimension through which this process becomes experienceable. By slowing immediate judgment, the cognitive mechanisms underlying perception gradually come into view. Cosmic Drift is concerned not with the natural scene itself, but with how looking alters our understanding of the world. By stripping objects of their original references of scale, the resulting images render the everyday unfamiliar and allow meanings beyond habitual experience to emerge through cognition. Through this process of looking, the image is no longer merely a record of reality, but becomes a field in which perception, memory, and consciousness participate in the formation of a world. Cosmic Drift suggests that the reality we experience is not simply the object itself, but something continuously formed through the interaction between perception and cognition.
